Description:   A town about 17 km NW by N of Turrawan Railway Station and about 13 km E by S of Kiandool Railway Station. Boundaries within the Narrabri Council area shown on map GNB3792.
Meaning:   Also: derived from Kamilaroi 'nhurraaybaraay' for 'snake place'. (Appleton; 1992). Also: big creek. (McCarthy. 1963). Also: 'two forks in the river' from John Griffiths, Nunearoo Aborigin- al Land Council. (Quirindi).
Origin:   NARRABRI - Aboriginal. Forks, Forked Sticks or possibly large creek. Other forms of the name are Nurraburai, Nurraburi, Nurruby the latter being the name of the station taken up by Patrick Quinn and Cyrus M. Doyle in 1863.
