Description:   A town of on the Castlereagh River and in the Warrumbungle Mountains. It is 465 km from Sydney having good road, rail and air facilities. It is near the Warrumbungle National Park. Boundaries within the Coonabarabran Council area shown on map GNB3754.
Meaning:   Probably derived from Kamilaroi 'gunbaraaybaa' meaning 'shit'. A mean- ing recorded earlier, 'peculiar odour', was presumably a bowdlerisat- ion. (Appleton; 1992).
Origin:   Coonabarabran - Aboriginal (From Place Names of N.S.W. their origins & Meanings by A.W. Reed) Inquisitive person. In the form Coolabarabran it was the name of a station owned by James Weston in 1848. The Local contraction is 'The Bran'.
