Description:   Founded in 1839, proclaimed a city in 1885. Famous as an educational and ecclesiastic centre, it contains The New England University and two cathedrals. Services are available daily by rail and air to Sydney and Brisbane.

History:   Proclaimed a town 17 November 1863. Early in 1843 a post office was opened at 'Armidale' and the Government Gazette notice March 31, 1843, was the first official notification of the placename (Atchison,1976).
