Meaning:   Aldbury is understood to mean `old fort`.
Origin:   Believed to have been named after Aldbury in Hertfordshire. The `d` was later dropped to become Albury. Previously known as `The Crossing Place` and `Sleepy Hollow` (Border City: William A Bayley).
History:   Aboriginal name: Bungambrewatah. Gazetted 13 April 1839. Proclaimed a town on 8 June 1859. Proclaimed a City 18 December 1946.
