Description:   A village about 4 km SW of Mittagong and about 8 km E of Berrima.
Meaning:   Possibly Aboriginal in origin and said to mean 'high and large'. (Not verified).(Appleton,1992).
Origin:   In 1829 T.L. Mitchell referred to a hill on the north of Mr Oxley's station...called by the natives Bowral. The settlement of the present name was formed in 1862. (Reed, 1969)
History:   Formerly Dharawal Aboriginal land.(Appleton,1992). In 1866, the name was spelt `Bowrall`. (Bailliere`s Gazetteer of 1866, p.77)
