Description:   A town on north side of Murrumbidgee River about 30 km NNW of Tumut and 398 km WSW of Sydney.
Meaning:   Derived from Aboriginal 'Gundabandoobingee' for cut (in the sinews) at the back of the knee with a tomahawk', or 'going upstream' or 'poor crows'. (From Gundagai - Its History, Verse & Song; P.5). Also: 'going upstream' or 'sinews'. (McCarthy; 1963).
Origin:   GUNDAGAI: Name of station owned by Ben Warby, 1826. Gazetted 10th October, 1838. Aboriginal.
