Meaning:   Commemorative
Origin:   The result of a poll by local inhabitants in June 1967. The old name of 'East Greta' was considered misleading and led to some confusion among visitors.
History:   Named to commemorate John Gillies who was one of the great Mayors of West Maitland in the last century, he was also a member of the Legislative Assembly for the district at the turn of the century.
