Description:   A town on the southern bank of Billabong Creek about 26 km north of Berrigan and 35km south south east of Urana.
Meaning:   Comes from Wiradhuri 'djirriildhuray' for 'with reeds'. (Appleton; 1992). Also: 'reedy place'. (McCarthy; 1963).
Origin:   Aboriginal.
History:   This town on the Newell Hwy was held by the Kelly gang for two days in 1879 when they captured the police station, cut the telegraph wires and robbed the bank. (A-Z of Aust. Towns & Cities).
