Description:   A town on the north coast of N.S.W. 604 rail km from Sydney. Boundaries within the Coffs Harbour Council area shown on map GNB3749.
Origin:   John Korff (Born London 1799, came to Sydney 1836, died 1870) was a ship builder and owner and later a Lloyds of London surveyor. He operated small sailers from Sydney. His grandchildren claimed that he discovered the harbour about 1847 whilst trying to shelter from a gale and reported it to the `authorities`.
History:   Gitten Mirreh - `big moon` was the Aboriginal name for the harbour. It was then known as Korff`s Harbour. The settlement was gazetted in 1861 as `Coffs Harbour`, the town in 1886, and the city in 1987.
