| Description: | A rural place about 3 km E of the junction of Paddys River and Wollondilly River. |
| Meaning: | The word came from the anglicised version of the Spanish "Canon". The old English spelling which was "Canyan". Ref: Mrs Massingham (Berrima District Post, 20 June 1974). |
| Origin: | Canyan Leigh was named by Mrs Jane Murray who took up a property between Paddys River and Long Swamp. The property overlooked the valley and this gave Mrs Murray the idea 'Canyan' or 'Canyon' being the name for a steep sided gully. (Ref. from Berrima District Post, 20 June 1974. |
